Chapter 10

BOGGS’S CASTLE was a fairly large house, but it wasn’t so big that Declan had a hard time locating Jonas. Simon had banished Jonas from the Bat Cave with threats of using Ben’s Taser on him. Declan decided Jonas must have taken him seriously because he wouldn’t go close to the door leading to the basement. That whole idea wasn’t a bad one, Declan decided, since Jonas’s personality had taken a hard and very sudden swing to left field. Ever since the shooting at city hall, Jonas had become a man Declan didn’t know.

Jonas was in the kitchen, but oddly Declan detected no aroma of coffee. Dressed in dark gray trousers and a light gray shirt, with a tie hanging untied around his neck, Jonas was trying—and failing—to open a bag of blood. A frustrated growl presaged him apparently squeezing too hard, and blood squirted from a corner of the bag onto his shirt.

“Damn,” Jonas mumbled, grabbing a towel and trying to wipe the blood off, which only succeeded in smearing it all over the material.

“Give me that,” Declan said gently and saved the bag from further damage by taking it away from Jonas. He poured some of the blood into a glass and held it out. “You need to drink this whole bag.”

“Are you going to stand here and watch me?” Jonas snapped. His face fell as soon as the words left his mouth.

“If I have to.”

Jonas took a few sips and said, “I’m sorry. Thank you.” He looked down at his shirt.

“Blood washes out fairly easily, and you have other shirts to change into.” Declan tried to steer Jonas to a chair, but when he resisted, leaning against the counter instead, Declan left him where he was. “You haven’t slept in the two days since the shooting and you’ve shut yourself off from us.” Jonas’s hand began to shake and Declan steadied it before more blood could go down the front of Jonas than into him. “What the hell is wrong with you, Jonas? You can’t go on like this. Have you told Blair? I know you killed those two men, but—”

Lucas picked then to show up. “What are you doing? You’re on administrative leave. Ben and Blair are typing up a statement for you to sign for your press release. I told you I’d take care of everything else, and I have.”

Jonas turned to him and sighed slowly. “Lucas, I have to talk to Sellers myself.”

“Call him,” Lucas said. “Next week.”

Declan put both hands on his hips and glanced at the ground. “Lucas, can you give us a few minutes?” Lucas looked between them and nodded. When Jonas arched an eyebrow and glared, Declan added, “Please. It won’t take long.”

“Sure. I’ll go see how your statement is coming.” Lucas’s expression let Declan know he was very confused.

Jonas hissed in a low voice, “I don’t want Blair involved in this. I never wanted him to see how it is or know or….”

“He became involved the minute your pheromones triggered your bonding.
